Spelling
READ WRITE INC.
At Osborne Primary School, we begin teaching spelling in Reception through our phonic program – Read Write Inc.
The alphabetic code is embedded first so that children can write simple words early on. The children write every day, rehearsing out loud what they want to write and composing word by word until they are confident enough to write independently. They write at the level of their spelling knowledge.
Children learn to:
Spell common words with common graphemes and suffixes;
Spell common words with unusual graphemes;
Write prepared sentences with correct spelling.
Children practise spelling everyday in Word Time lessons and Get Writing lessons.

Fred Fingers
Children learn to spell using ‘Fred Fingers’.
Fred Fingers:
1. Children are taught to use the non-dominant hand for fingers and their dominant hand to pinch the sounds. Palms are facing children.
2. Children are taught to:
· Hold up the correct number of fingers for the number of sounds in the word being spelt.
· Say the word.
· Say the sounds as you pinch each sound onto a finger.
3. Ask children to write the word as they say the sounds, underlining any ‘special friends’ if
necessary.
4. Ask children to say the sounds as you write the word on the board, underlining any ‘special friends’ if necessary.
5. Ask children to tick/correct each sound in their written word.
SPELLING SHED
Once pupils have completed the RWI program, they are taught spelling through Spelling Shed.
Our weekly spelling lessons include:
Revise
Each lesson contains a revision section where children will revisit sounds and spelling patterns from earlier weeks.
Introduce
In the introduction, children will be introduced to the words of the week. There will be an explanation of how the words are linked.
Explore
They will examine the spelling words in more detail. They might look at aspects such as the number of syllables, tricky sounds and the morphology of the words.
Independent Practice
Pupils then have an opportunity to demonstrate what they have learned through an independent activity involving the spelling words.
